Matt Dionne is an award-winning filmmaker based in Toronto, Canada.

His films primarily fall into the comedy and drama genres — his dramatic films tend to explore themes related to sport, identity, and mental health through gritty realism, while his comedy films often still deal with serious subject matter, but in a much more witty and sardonic way.

The script for his short film, Athletic Withdrawal, won Best Concept in the 2023 Paperscreenplay screenwriting competition; and was nominated for Best Short Screenplay at the 2023 New York Screenwriting Awards, and Best Dramatic Screenplay at the 2024 Niagara Canada International Film Festival. His pilot script Redwood State was a quarterfinalist in the 2020 Screencraft Screenwriting Fellowship competition.

His directorial debut, Athletic Withdrawal, won Best Drama at the 2023 Iconic Images Film Festival, Best Actress at the 2023 Carpe Diem Film Festival, Best Director at the 2023 International Motion Picture Awards, and Best Short Film at the 2024 Reels International Film Festival. It was also nominated for Best Actress at the 2023 Chatham-Kent International Film Festival, Best Short Narrative at the 2024 ORION International Film Festival, and Best Drama at the 2024 Niagara Canada International Film Festival.

He has produced a trio of award-winning short films, including Out of the Equation, which won The BIFF Bison’s Choice Award at the 2024 Bloomington Indiana Film Festival, and Best Cinematography at the 2024 Niagara Canada International Film Festival; and was nominated for Best North American Short Drama at the 2024 Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival.
